I dont think young people protesting a genocide and young people supporting ethnic cleansing are morally or politically equivalent. I hope that that is not being implied here. Indeed to ask for justice in Palestine is to resist the will to ethnic cleansing that some members of Israel’s government are clearly trying to achieve.

useless to get in an argument but even a basic look at the facts would show you that there is no genocide happening at least on the Israeli side, no on the side of Hamas, that's a different story they are very clear that there goal is the genocide of the jews. More to the point criticism of the war - criticism of Netanyahu is very legitimate - and reasonable. Unfortunately criticism of Israel quickly turns into jew hatred.

Genocide is a category and crime under international law and the ICC, which is the legitimate judiciary authority in deciding such cases, has ruled that there is a good probability that Israel is committing genocide, a judgment most competent neutral international lawyers agree with. In the end it doesnt matter what you or I think about whether this particular horrendous slaughter of innocents constitutes genocide, it matters what the legitimate authorities decide and it seems as if they will decide that it does. Which makes the now commonplace use of word valid in my view.

yes those Palestinians and their elected terror leaders. the olive farmers could have engaged top London law firm Carter Ruck to represent their interests, but they didn't so its all their own fault really.

voting Hamas would be like voting for Sinn Fein at the Northern Ireland Assembly. oh wait ...

"asserting that the group [Hamas] is a creation of Mossad."

I believe there is evidence of the creation of Hamas being supported by the Israeli state.

Frightening where to the world is heading. Not only in Germany it seems it is a world wide trend.

I think 2 things are driving this, firstly is youth being young people - as many a babyboomer has said "thank god social media didn't exist when I was a teenager".

2nd point it could be that the AFD and others have very effectively weaponized German privacy laws (via tiktok) i.e. discussion around mass migration.

I think your worry/fear about where this goes is founded on real concerns - I mean we all dismissed university students as entitled brats who, once they hit the real world, will grow up. But as Andrew Sullivan (?) said, we all live on campus now. Those "entitled brats" are the countries future leaders.

Way Way Way off topic but how does this happen "who were soon fired by their employers." Assuming they were employees and not contractors can they be fired so easily?

The Middle East is not your strongest suit! It’s a very Eurocentric analysis, what TikTok is doing has been done by Meta, but no one on the west raise an eyebrow

Great article Jörg. Alarming indeed. I was just asking a friend yesterday: "when did young people become so hateful?" Not just disenfranchised young people, but many so-called privileged young people too... This might be interesting to you if you havent seen it already: https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2024/may/28/young-more-anti-immigration-than-old-in-parts-of-europe-polling-shows

Not just young people but older people as well. I have several retired friends, very left, very liberal, reliable Dem voters who complain about migrants getting very generous handouts while seniors after a lifetime of hard work are forced to hunt for bottles to return in order to buy food.
