"German politicians and intellectuals understand that civilian deaths alone can't possibly tell the whole story of a war. Indeed, it can be misleading to give them too much weight." Yes, let's ignore the 11,500+ deaths and 4,500 children included in that + the many thousands buried in the rubble. At the same time let's ignore the 6m+ Jewish people murdered and the 20m+ Russians of WW2. It's this type of talk that normalises war and the its consequences for the rule of international law and peace. Predictably, Zionism knows no end to its colonial ambitions: Let's ignore the 13 years of total apartheid applied to Gaza. The throttling of the rights of the Palestinians and the insidious management of everything from food, water, energy, building materials and more. Hundreds of thousands of ordinary families across the world know that what is happening in Gaza is wrong. It is western governments that are out of step with their people and Germany's ever more draconian stamping on support for the right of Palestine to exist is a very worrying trend. Israel has determined that both Gaza and the West Bank can exist only at their whim. Their wall, apartheid and economic might has strangled Palestine. Netanyahu determined that the 'human animals' could exist out of sight and mind behind their wall. Germans should know that eventually a wall falls and exposes who's behind building it. Germany figures it is trapped by its history when in fact it is not. The extreme Zionists in control of what is loosely termed a democracy in the middle east is in fact the very same forces the rest of Europe fought and died for fighting in WW2. A monster has been created in the Middle East and its called Israel and until the US reigns in its proxy and forces peace and conciliation on both the Zionists AND Palestinians none of this is going to go away. There is no military solution. The Germans and other western leaders need to wake up to this fact and should be pushing hard for a ceasefire and peace as readily as they provide millions of Euros and weapons. The consequences of not brokering a lasting peace and ensuring equanimity between Israel and Palestine are too awful to contemplate for future international relations. War crimes are being conducted on an industrial scale by Israel and international laws are being trashed. This isn't a place Germany wants to find itself, surely? It's always brave to be an armchair warrior when it's not your family being obliterated.

Those 20+ Russians were not Russians, since it was a time of Soviet Union with 15 Republics and even more different nations. Most suffered the republics that we there closest to the frontline - Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, European part of Russia's Republic. If you fight with the wordings in the article, be mindful of your wordings and stereotypes too.

This is, in my opinion, a very simplistic pov. I am writing from the US where the majirity of Jews (Bernie Sanders is a prime example) are protesting against the hard line approach of the fascist government of Netanyahu. Jews are suffering anti Semitism everywhere in this country because of the Zionist attacks on the Palestinians, which is not Hamas. Finalky the IDF decided to go inside the hospital where it clained Hamas terrorists were hiding, while dozens of premature babies were dying. Very human, right? Nothing justifies the killing of babies and like Jews in America say, "Not in Our Name."

Dear Monica, Hamas has used premature babies in al-Shifa for propaganda since years. I am saying that as someone who has been dragged through the unit years ago during one of the previous Gaza wars. The claim then was that there were far more premature babies than would be expected due to Israeli incursions. As far as I could make out, the greatest threat to these poor little things‘ health and survival came from the hospital staff taking a total foreigner into the unit without any bio-security or regard for an introduction of viruses and bacteria. I didn’t even have to wash my hands. The medical staff disregarded these basics as well. Hamas‘s propaganda came first and foremost.

Are you suggesting the medical staff, UN and aid workers in al-Shifa are members of Hamas and are finding prem babies to place in the ITU? Seriously, you're worried about bio-security? Israeli bulldozers are taking down walls, soldiers are firing weapons inside the hospital, little energy if any to power the incubators, fresh water, medicine and food virtually non-existent and the wounded being rounded up and interrogated. All very Nazi like don't you think? Over 25,000 bombs and missiles have rained down on Gaza, the equivalent of two nuclear bombs. Apparently it's all OK because these are 'targetted' and unfortunately over 11,500 civilians just stood in the way along with their children. I think most people can make up their own minds as to whose propaganda comes first and foremost.

Hi Gavin, please read again what I wrote - it refers to quite a few years ago. Not now. Best, Reiner

Quite rightly Hamas must be driven out of Palestine forever as it is an heinous organisation and its actions on 7th October were horrendous.

Unfortunately Germany will always turn a blind eye to anything that Israel does. Germany can never ever take an unbiased view because Germany will never be able to move on from the horrors perpetrated by the Third Reich a government that it’s own people opted for. That means that government after government and generation after generation will support Zionism and its actions without question regardless in order to attempt to purge Germany’s historical soul but it threatens to contribute to a repeat of its own history on a foreign shore.

I am astounded: to think that mass extermination and deportation of millions of people is acceptable. Is this something that is still considered in Germany as something not to be given too much weight?

Yes, ambiguity is not an option. When colored, melanined bodies are being terminated whiteness ought not to suffer from any doubt. Any kind of self-doubt and introspection must be banished, cruel, heartless conviction is the way to go. For whatever else one might accuse Germany, one can't accuse them of inconsistency: together with the US and UK (West) Germany remained apartheid South African government's strongest friend. And that friendship started right after (supposedly) the "lessons " from the brutalities of Holocaust had been "learned". How should it be any different for an apartheid state today when it keeps killing the non-white people? Germany's has always been on the "right" side of history. Its a matter of consistency.
