A sobering assessment indeed. Sounds far more convincing than the idealism to which all too many Germans are wedded historically and at present. I doubt, though, that a near catastrophic event would make much of a difference. The future will bring either a catastrophe with a politically possibly terrible follow-up or a leader like Helmut Schmidt who can push through realistic actions.
