Dear Reader,

Millions of Germans can’t get to work by bus, train or tram today because the main public sector union, Verdi, has called its members out on strike.

What is a nuisance for commuters might just be the beginning of much more far-reaching walkouts.

The trade union wants an eight percent pay rise for the 2.5 million people who are employed by local governments. That isn’t just bus drivers, it also includes nursery teachers, carers, bin men, and hospital staff.
