Something North Korean about it all in 1965? children were given the day off school, equipped with Union Jack flags and sent out to wave furiously as she and her husband passed by? Certainly not so in my case, I traveled to Munich on my own initiative. Nobody gave me a Union Jack. I just wanted to savour the moment when we as Germans seized to be pariahs and became members of the community of nations. Such was the magnitude of the Queen’s visit.

The "luxury train" she used was (in the '40's) Herr Himmler's mode of transport . . . so I do hope it was very well cleaned before she got on board :)
