The Green party have until now stayed fairly quiet on the actions of the activist group Letzte Generation, whose main method of protest is gluing themselves to roads in order to stop traffic. Most notably, the Green mayor of Hannover raised eyebrows in March when he agreed to lobby the Bundestag on the group’s behalf on the condition that they leave his city in peace. Now though, the Greens have decided to come off the fence… but they haven’t jumped in the direction that one may have expected. One of the leaders of the Green faction in the Bundestag has instead derided the Letzte Generation as “elitist and self-righteous.” Their protests were leading to “the opposite of what we need in the current situation, namely a broad movement in society in favour of climate protection,” said Green MdB Irene Mihalic.
