Boycotting the Munich massacre memorial
The refusal of victims' families to attend a memorial to mark 50 years since 11 Israeli athletes lost their lives in a terror attack is a major embarrassment for Germany.
Background
September 5th marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich massacre, when Palestinian terrorists kidnapped and murdered eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games.
The Games were supposed to show Germany as a modern, friendly country four decades after the Nazi propaganda show in Berlin. Instead, the light-touch security measures led to disaster: eight Black September militants were able to jump a fence into the Olympic village, where they broke into the Israeli quarters and took their captives hostage at gun point.
